The Benefits Of Exercise On Learning

We all know that exercise has many benefits other than just giving us a great body. It also ensures that we stay healthy. Other than these, there are also other things that exercise can help with like slowing down the aging process and reducing stress. Regular exercise can actually help our brain as well. For example, it can improve our memory and our learning as well.

Exercise helps with improving blood circulation. With good blood circulation, all the other organs in our body receive the right amount of nutrients they need to function properly. This is true with our brain as well. Our brain needs a large amount of oxygen and glucose which are supplied by the nutrients carried in our blood. Increased blood flow to the brain prevents certain brain diseases as well. Some forms of dementia and Alzheimer’s are some of the known diseases to the brain caused by the lack of blood it receives. Working out also enhances the growth of new nerves and cells in the brain. Research shows that the growth of new cells in the brain are focused mainly on the part of the brain responsible for learning and memory known as the hippocampus.

Aging causes changes in our body including changes to our brain. One of these changes is a decline in our cognitive function. This causes us to have a harder time learning new things as we grow older. Since exercise helps with slowing down the aging process, it also slows down its harmful effects on our brain. Exercise also helps with combatting stress which makes our mind sharper and more alert. The three elements that need to be present for learning to occur are active processing, alertness and immersion. These can be achieved when your mind is more alert and sharp. Stress can cause distress that causes distractions and it prevents further brain growth and learning.

Simple exercises like walking are not as effective as more challenging ones. That’s because more hormones are released when more rigorous exercise is done. Most hormones released during exercise help with promoting the growth and repair of cells and tissue. One of those hormones is know as norepinephrine. Norepinephrine is a hormone that aids in improving our memory. Exercises like strength training, dancing and aerobics makes our muscles do a variety of movements which causes it to produce the hormones needed to stimulate cell growth in our brain. Diet is always coupled with exercise so you also have to watch what you eat to make sure that your brain can function properly. Foods that are rich in omega 3 fats, antioxidants, and whole grains are a must.

There are many benefits that exercise can give us that are not well known. We now know that getting brawn is good for the brain. It only goes to show that a sound body is equal to a sound mind.
